Knowledge Transfer

For farmers

A holistic approach to animal health and farm profitability means knowledge transfer is key to our practice model. An increasingly professional farming industry demands a workforce that is effective and up to date with best practice. In the face of this demand, we find that farmers are frequently presented with masses of information from many (often conflicting) sources.

As dedicated farm vets, we bring together the relevant information in a clear and practical way. This provides an independent and unambiguous source of expertise for farmers to draw from.

Previous courses include:

  • Practical Lambing: Novice and Advanced
  • Practical Calving
  • Mastering Medicines (compliant with Red Tractor recommendation)
  • Parasite Workshops for QMS

Generally our courses have a strong practical component – we do not aim for death by PowerPoint! Joe and Jenny have both passed ‘Train the Trainer’ courses run by XLVets. All courses come with a certificate of attendance.

We can also offer bespoke courses for particular groups. To discuss a potential course, just telephone the practice on 01669 838 288 or email claire.neillans@bsfh.co.uk.

For veterinary surgeons

The caseload at Black Sheep Farm Health is nearly 100% beef and sheep, and spans severely disadvantaged hill farms to more fertile coastal holdings. Our consultancy workload and own professional development takes us across the UK and beyond, to continental Europe and North America.

As the only farm-exclusive practice of this kind in the UK, we can offer insight for other practices looking to improve their offerings to, and sustainably increase revenues from, their beef and sheep clients.

Our team have taught various CPD to veterinary surgeons, including:

  • Sheep Scanning
  • Bull and Tup Breeding Soundness Examination CPD
  • Beef and Sheep for New Graduates (As part of the XL New Graduate Programme)
  • Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) for the practitioner
  • XLVets Day One Competencies for final year students

Joe Henry and Jenny Hull have both attended ‘Train the Trainer’ courses run by XLVets. Both have extensive experience of beef and sheep work (over twenty-five and fifteen years, respectively). Joe is an RCVS-recognised Advanced Practitioner in Sheep Heath and Production, and both Joe and Jenny hold RCVS Certificates in Sheep Health and Production. Jenny sits on numerous boards, including for BVDFree England, British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA) and Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA). More information about the team can be found here.

For more information on CPD we offer for veterinary surgeons, telephone the practice on 01669 838 288 or email Jenny on jenny.hull@bsfh.co.uk.
